Maserati Birdcage Camoradi Streamlined T61 Le Mans 1960
Details of the original Maserati Birdcage T61
The streamlined version of the Maserati T61 was prepared for Camoradi in view of Le Mans 24 Hours using a Plexiglas windscreen severely angled and that emerged from the front end; the driver had to look over the windscreen for adequate visibility. This special windscreen proved that regulations are not always adequate. The rear end had been elongated in teardrop profile. This streamlined body allowed faster top speed in long straight line. After several laps in an impressive leading position, the Maserati Birdcage strealined driven by Gregory and Daigh spent a long time in the pit for a jammed starter and stopped definitively after 8 hours with a broken engine. The Maserati T61 was equiped with a four cylinder 2890 cc producing 250 hp at 7.000 rpm.
