The 'S' was created in a magical period for the company, shortly after the merger of Daimler and Benz, while Ferdinand Porsche was Chief Engineer. He built a powerful, yet versatile automobile - a true all rounder, at home on the race track, at hill climbs and providing exhilarating driving for the road.

The signature engineering feature was its 'on demand' Roots type supercharger, that only came into operation when the accelerator was fully depressed, boosting power output from 120 to 180 brake horsepower for a few glorious seconds! This was true for the Mercedes Benz 680 S, replacing the 630K in 1927,  with the impressive 6,8 liter power unit nestled into a low slung double dropped chassis with a massive radiator.

It is the 710 SS introduced in 1928 that was truly unique. The aluminium 6 cylinder engine was upgraded with aluminium pistons , larger valves and greater horsepower (225-250 hp) and the complete car was further improved to create ultimate performance. The engine, with 7065 cc displacement , is developing 140 bhp at 3 200 rpm, increasing to 200 bhp once the supercharger is engaged. This allows a top speed of around 200 km/h.

The 710 SS (for Super Sport) was claimed to be the fastestsportscar, tested by "Motor" magazine in 1931 on the Brooklands circuit and clocked 103 miles/hour with full road equipment  and not yet fully run in. Highly sought-after by the wealthy clientele for road use, the 710 SS was equally successful in competition.

The short chassis version 710 SSK (Super Sport Kurtz) became legendary, especially with driver like Manfred von Brauschistsch or Rudolf Caracciola (the "Rainmaster") who was victorious in all major races such as the Ulster Trophy, the Avus, the Eiffel, the Mille Miglia and Monte Carlo. In spite of its weight, the 710 SSK  achieved lap times to match the fastest Alfa Romeo and Bugatti Grand Prix cars of that period.

According to factory record 111 examples of the 710 SS chassis have been built with a majority fitted with Sindelfingen factory coachwork while other chassis were sent to external coachbuilders like Thrupp & Maberly or Fernandez & Darrin.
