Frankfurt IAA 2009

frankfurt iaa 2009 alternative propulsion

Hybrid & Electric car special review

The United States Administration has announced its intention to put one million electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid cars on its roads by 2015. Germany recently unveiled an action to have one million electric cars on its roads by 2020. France is mentioning 2 million electric vehicles and 4, 4 million charging points by 2020. Japan wants electric vehicles to make up half of all vehicle sales within a decade.
Nearly every major car manufacturer introduced one or more projects of electric cars or hybrid electric car at the 2009 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show. Some newcomers in the automobile business are dedicated their entrance in the market with full electric or hybrid vehicles. We have prepared this special section covering electric and hybrid vehicle presently available on the market or with a projected date for introduction, in order to provide an overview of this new trend in alternative propulsion. Public service and business use vehicles may eventually get started when utilisation circuit is defined and a limited number a charging points can do the energy filling job. Local car rental for short urban utilisation could be feasible soon. For other user the electric adventure may be limited to plug in hybrid awaiting an electric charging infrastructure for a pure electric experience. Electric Power Companies and Electric Infrastructure dedicated Companies like Better Place or Elektromotive will have a key role together with Government and local authorities support for this change to alternative propulsion can happen.

1 - Tesla Roadster

Tesla Roadster 700th car delivered on occasion of the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show.
The full electric Roadster made in California accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in just 3,7 seconds and can travel more than 300 km on one charge of its lithium-ion battery pack installed in front of the rear axle. The electric motor is on the rear axle while electronic power control is positioned above the motor.  Sales price is about 108.000 US $. Tesla Motors founded in 2006 is specialized in electric drive and battery packaging. Daimler Benz invested 10 % stake of Tesla Motors and ordered the electric drive system for 1.000 Smart ED. The Tesla Roadster is one of the only electric car available on the market today; it is sold in North America and Europe.

With the unveiling in Frankfurt of the Vision S 500 Plug-in HYBRID, Mercedes-Benz demonstrates that large, safe and refined automobiles do indeed have a future. The close-to-production prototype of the innovative plug-in hybrid driveline enables a fuel consumption of only 3.2 litres of petrol per 100 kilometres and an electric-only range of 30 kilometres. Dr. Zetsche, “The roughly 370 hp S 500 Plug-in HYBRID offers a clear glimpse of the future for luxury automobiles ‘Made in Germany’. Green technologies in fascinating vehicles for the most demanding customers - that is our approach, and we are sticking steadfastly to it.”

The Vision S 500 Plug-in HYBRID is the first “three litre car” in the premium class. The technology vehicle consumes only 3.2 litres of petrol per 100 kilometres according to the NEDC and can even drive for up to 30 kilometres solely on electricity and therefore without producing any local emissions. The drive system consists of three main components: a powerful V6 petrol engine with direct injection, a 44 kW/60 hp hybrid module and a lithium-ion battery with more than 10 kWh of storage capacity.
