Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Speciale Le Mans Touring 1938
The Alfa Romeo 2900B was unrivalled both on road and track; it took the first three places in the 1938 Mille Miglia. Touring prepared a specially aerodynamic, super-light body for the Le Mans 24 Hours 1938 the same year- the one which is on show at the Alfa Romeo Museo today - which showed itself to be very fast and reliable. Despite the fact that they had outclassed all their opponents, drivers Biondetti and Sommer were held up in the closing stages of the race by a blow-out. Sommer managed to get the car back to the pits and Biondetti took off again like a tornado. But after having built up a lead of 160 kilometres over his nearest rival a broken valve put him out of the race. |
