Bugatti Type 43 Grand Sport 1927 with coachwork by Jean Bugatti
According to famous autority High Conway the Type 43 is one of the four extraordinary models together with the Brescia, the 35 Grand Prix and the Type 57 ( Bugatti 57 TT 1935 - Bugatti Type 57 SC Atalante Coupe Gangloff 1937 - Bugatti 57 S Atalante 1938 - ) . After the Type 35 Grand Prix had conquered all of World's race circuits, a number of Bugatti enthousiasts expressed their wish for a four seats Bugatti suitable for long journeys and capable of holding a minimum of luggage. Bugatti also wanted to prepare for a scheduled rule to make four seats mandatory for Le Mans 24 Hours in the Thirties. Hence was born the Bugatti Type 43 Grand Sport, combining the Grand Prix engine of the Type 35B (2.3 Litre 8 cylinder wit h Roots supercharger) with a lovely well balanced and beautiful Bugatti design coachwork with a pointed tail just like the Grand Prix cars.
The Bugatti Type 43 Grand Sport was one of the first sports cars legal for the road use that had a top speed of 180 kph (112 mph), and a cruising speed of 150 kph (93 mph). One hundred and sixty Bugatti Type 43 wre built between 1927 and 1930. Only fifty examples have survived. The Bugatti Type 43 Grand Sport was equally popular in competition and did extremely well on the international circuits such as the Brooklands Double Twelve, the Tourist Trophy, the Alpine Trial, the 24 Hours of Spa and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with famous drivers such as Malcolm Campbell.
The particular blue car, the Bugatti Type 43 Grand Sport Chassis N° 43181 1927, has been exhibited by Lukas Hüni AG at the 2015 Retromobile in Paris and is part of a private collection.
The black example with pate number PJ679 was proposed at the same occasion for Artcurial Auction with an estimation 2.000.000 to 3.000.000 Euros. The car with chassis number 43171 was driven by Malcolm Campbell for the 1928 Tourist Trophy.
This 1927 Bugatti Type 43 was not sold during the Retromobile Auction.
The blue model with N°55 is a 1928 Type 43 seen while entered at 2012 Classic Le Mans.
