Cheetah GT Prototype 1964
Bill Thomas Motors from Anaheim , California , developed an produced a unique racing car that could challenge the Carrol Shelby new Cobra concept integrating English designed multi-tubular space frame with Ford V8 engine. The Cheetah GT Prototype was intended to be fully American concept. Bill Thomas wanted a mid engine concept, so the engine was placed behind the front axle. Two roll bars protected the pilot and the windscreen had no frame; Body was minimal, just to cover mechanical components and leaving full access . 1963 prototype had an aluminium body but later versions were fitted with fiberglass body. Body style was exceptional for such short wheelbase car. Engine was originated from General Motors, a 5351 cc.(327 cubic inches) V8 unit eventhough 427 unit could be installed in this 775kg car.
Bill Thomas was planning production of at least 100 cars to obtain GT registration. Unfortunately the plant was destroyed by a fire and it appears that only 16 cars had been produced obliging the Cheetah GT to race in Prototype Class.
