When Lee Iacocca was appointed Chaiman of Ford Motor he decided for the preparation of a production sports car intended for young customers. His decision led to the production of the 1964 Ford Mustang that will encounter a great commercial success over the year. The production Ford Mustang was a sort of answer by Ford to the Chevrolet Corvette. The first prototype for this Ford project was the very small mid engined sports car concept. The project was conducted by Roy Lunn, an English engineer recently emigrated to the USA; his project was more similar to European sports cars. He proposed to use the 1.9 litre V4 engine developed for the European Ford Taunus. The body style was prepared by Bordinat of Ford Styling. The Ford Mustang I concept was introduced on occasion of the 1962 US Grand Prix and later at several Motor Show. Ford management, however, decided not to pursue with such a complex project and moved toward front engined rear wheel drive sports car which would be more practical. The Ford Mustang I was exhibited at Ford Museum at Dearborn Michigan.
