GM AEROVETTE first appeared as experimental prototype and show car for the Wankel rotary engine for which GM had taken a license. Called XP 882 the prototype appeared in 1970 with a 400 cv four rotor Wankel in mid engined position. In 1976, the Aerovette reappeared with a V8 in place of the Wankel. Bill Mitchell, Head of GM Styling Design has prepared the exceptionally balanced shape that hardly evolved over the project. Access to the cabin was by gull wing doors.
