Mercedes F200 Imagination Concept Car 1996
In 1996, Daimler Benz introduced the Concept Car F200 Imagination at Paris Motor Show. Following the tradition this Mercedes Concept Car is not just a Design performance but also a research vehicule intended to illustrate and test new ideas for future production models. the Mercedes F200 Imagination comprises new ergonomic concepts based on drive-by-wire technology and cockpit design.
The Mercedes F200 Imagination is equipped with sidesticks instead of a steering wheel and foot operated controls . Sidesticks are little joysticks in the doors and the center console for steering and braking. This is impossible without electronic assistance , and so the technology is called drive-by-wire.
Until now exclusively mechanical elements have existed which are directly activated by pulses emanating from the driver, these are now linked with electric and hydraulic actuators whose actions are determined by electronic pulses. If the driver pushes the sidestick forward, the F200 Imagination accelerates. If he moves the lever to the right or left, the vehicule steers to the right or left. If he pulls the lever back, the vehicule brakes and, if desired, after stopping drives in reverse. To get a little relief the driver can switch the system to the front seat passenger and his sidesticks.
The Mercedes F200 also comprises Active Body Control which uses electronics to keep the car without transgressing the physical limits. The electronics keep the car safely on course through lightning fast intervention in steering, braking, engine or transmission management and chassis control.
Video cameras are utilized in place of rearview mirrors.
The Mercedes F200 Imagination is a design concept for a two door coupe propelled by a 12 cylinders 6,0 litres 394 hp with rear wheel drive, 5 speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. The F200 Imagination has a transparent roof to flood the interior with light. The electro transparent glass can be darkened at the push of a button to avoid excessive heating of the interior due to strong insulation. The glass has an intermediate layer, a liquid crystal film made of electrically conductive plastic.
