Peugeot Type 5 -V2 1026cc engine -1893-1895
The Peugeot Type 5 was developed in 1893 for production in 1894 and 1895. The Peugeot Type 5 is an improvement of the Peugeot Type 3 and was specially developed for the intercity race Paris Rouen organised by the "Le Petit Journal" newspaper and held on July 22nd 1894. A "works team" of five Peugeot were entered in the endurance reliability contest. Peugeot was declared winner of the contest together with a Panhard & Levassor and shared the winner prize. Twenty one cars participated in the 127 km (79 mile) contest and seventeen reached the arrival at Rouen at average speed 9,8 to 18,6 km/h (6.1 to 11.6 miles per hour).
Peugeot started manufacturing horseless vehicle in 1891. These automobiles were propelled by two cylinder engines made by Panhard & Levassor under license of Daimler Company.
Only fourteen Type 5 were produced. The rear mounted 1,026 cc (72x 126 mm) vee-twin engine with hot tube ignition and spray carburettor had engine speed adjusted by a governor. The transmission to the rear wheels was by double cone clutch and a four speed and reverse gearbox with double chain drive. The steering is chain operated and controlled by a two handles steering wheel. The wheels are fitted with solid ruber tyres and steel spokes. The Peugeot Type 5 was 20 % lighter compared to the standard Type 3.
The most extraordinary feature is the hollow tube tubular chassis employed as radiator and connected with a water tank. There was no radiator. Heated water is pumped around inside the chassis tubes to disperse the heat. Top speed announced for 26 km/h (16 miles per hour)
