Geneva, March 2013 - The 2013 edition of the Geneva Motor Show more than ever proposed an exceptional selection of exclusive high performance machines with carbon fibre reinforced parts all around. Ferrari as well as McLaren have associated electric drive to the high power gasoline engines for the first time and with the purpose of improving performances with low-end torque.. McLaren even brought the 20 years old first production car with carbon fibre monocoque structure, the McLaren F1. The carbon fibre structure is also adopted for electric and hybrid soon to be production models by BMW or Volkswagen. The Volkswagen plug-in hybrid XL1 prototype is aimed not at performance but for the lowest fuel consumption, that is also pollutant emissions. Geneva Motor Show also presented a traditional wide selection of design studies and concept vehicles. Electric and Hybrid vehicles are widespread on various makers exhibits but it appears as the electric drive proposition for current production models is no more on the front page of the automobile news. It shows that these solutions are now integral part of the automobile propositions. Some racing cars left the track to illustrate the promotion and development action of major manufacturers.

In particular, the Alfa Romeo Style Centre passionately contributed to the various phases of the project, from the product brief, with the presentation of the historic collection of the brand, to the initial style proposals, from clay modelling to the mathematical definitions for the full-scale model. Dimensions: length 4700 mm - width 1920 mm - height 1320 mm – wheelbase 2900 mm.
The Alfa Romeo Gloria Project illustrates a sport sedan with bold lines running along the side to the rear end. On the road, it would be powered by a latest generation V6 or V8 bi-turbo engine. On the bonnet, there is a strong reference to the Alfa Romeo shield sculpted from the car’s lines, emphasising the three-dimensional nature of the shapes. The front leather straps are reminiscent of the memorable leather boot straps of the brand’s historic cars.

- Volkswagen XLI Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle expected for 2014 |
The Volkswagen XL1 is the result of a decade of Research and Development by Volkswagen for a 1 Litre per 100 km vehicle suitable for everyday use. Three different prototypes have been unvealed in 2002, 2009 and 2011. The Volkswagen XL1 is an automotile project that follows pure sports car design principles: low weight (795 kg), perfect aerodynamics (Cd 0.189) and a low centre of gravity (1,153 mm high). This gives the efficient Volkswagen the ability to cruise on the road at a constant speed of 100 km/h using just 6.2 kW/8.4 PS. In all-electric mode, the XL1 requires less than 0.1 kWh to cover a driving distance of over one kilometre.
The Volkswagen XL1 is electronically limited to 160 km/h. It offers high-tech lightweight design, perfect aerodynamics and a plug-in hybrid system – consisting of a two-cylinder TDI engine (35 kW/48 PS), E-motor (20 kW/27 PS), 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG) and 60 cells 5,5 kWh lithium-ion battery – all make it possible for the new Volkswagen XL1 to emit just 21 g/km of CO2. If necessary, the XL1, with a top speed of 160 km/h, can accelerate to 100 km/h in just 12.7 seconds. Clearly, 0.9 l/100 km fuel consumption is a record figure that has not been achieved by any other road legal and practical vehicle to this date.

- Mitsubishi CA-MiEV and GR-HEV Concepts 2013 |
Supported by three years of i-MiEV global customer feedback since 2009 as well as continuous progress in battery technology and electric drivetrain, MMC now considers taking pure EVs beyond a mostly urban environment with a next generation compact EV such as this Concept CA-MiEV, a demonstrator relying on next generation EV systems and high density batteries, light weight as well as advanced aerodynamics to offer a 300 km driving range.
The next logical step will be to expand further, adapting electric components to the demands
of an even larger, tougher, sportier vehicle with both work and leisure in mind in either mature or emerging markets as illustrated by Concept GR-HEV, Mitsubishi Motors’ inaugural take at Hybrid (HEV) technology, applied for the first time to a Mitsubishi one-ton pickup truck.

- Land Rover Defender Electric Experimental Vehicle |
The Land Rover Electric Experimental vehicle is a research vehicle delivering zero emissions whilst retaining its tough, go-anywhere capability. The standard diesel engine and gearbox in the 110 Defenders have been replaced by a 70kW (94bhp), 330Nm electric motor twinned with a 300-volt, lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 27kWh, giving a range of more than 50 miles. In typical, low speed off-road use it can last for up to eight hours before recharging. The battery can be fully charged by a 7kW fast charger in four hours, or a portable 3kW charger in 10 hours.
The electric vehicles (EVs) retain the Defender’s legendary four-wheel drive system and differential lock. Because the electric motor delivers maximum torque from the moment it starts, there’s no need for gear shifting and the transmission comprises a single speed, 2.7:1 reduction gearbox combined with the existing Defender four-wheel drive system. A modified version of Land Rover’s Terrain Response® System has also been incorporated.
The battery weighs 410kg and is mounted in the front of the Defender in place of the diesel engine. Kerb weight is 100kg more than a basic Defender 110 and ranges from 2055kg to 2162kg depending whether the body style is a pick-up, hard top or station wagon.
All the major components in the electric powertrain - including the battery, inverter and motor - are air-cooled rather than liquid cooled, saving a considerable amount of weight and complexity and adding robustness. Regenerative braking has been optimised to such an extent that using Hill Descent Control, the motor can generate 30kW of electricity. Because the battery technology can be charged very quickly at a rate of up to twice its capacity of 54kW without reducing battery life, almost all of the regenerated energy can be recovered and stored. Up to 80 percent of the kinetic energy in the vehicle can be recovered in this way, depending on conditions.
“This project is acting as a rolling laboratory for Land Rover to assess electric vehicles, even in the most arduous all-terrain conditions. It gives us a chance to evolve and test some of the technologies that may one day be introduced into future Land Rover models,” said Antony Harper, Jaguar Land Rover Head of Research.
Although there are no plans for the all-terrain electric Defender to enter series production, the seven EVs will go into service in specialist real world trials later this year.
