What is the common point between a 1905 24.452 cc V8 200 HP Darracq and a 2015 Aston Martin 7.0 Litre V12 800 hp track-only Vulcan. We could say a search for high performance by development a maximum power for a minimum weight. The Darracq reaches 900 kg (1982 lb.) for 200 hp while the Vulcan is announced at 1,350 kg (2,976 lb.) for 800-plus hp. Anyway, both cars were exhibited in action on the track at the 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
110 years separate these two show cars presented at Goodwood for the 22nd Festival of Speed. The 1905 200 HP Darracq changed hands for 280.900 Euros at a Bonhams auction in 2006. The Sales price for the Track-only Aston Martin Vulcan is estimated well over 2 Million $ for a limited production of 24 examples.

- Jaguar D-Type long-nose 1954 1957
|
1954 saw the appearance of the successor to the successful Jaguar C Type racing car in the form of the D Type. In engineering terms, the D Type was a trailblazing advanced development – with disc brakes on all four wheels and an aluminium monocoque chassis. The engine and front axle were mounted on a tubular aluminium frame. The engine design of the car was significantly influenced by aviation research. For example, the fuel tanks were made of deformed metal within the cells of the monocoque. The main objective of the D Type development for Jaguar was to race it in the 24 Hours Race in Le Mans and in 1955 as well as in 1956 and in 1957 this legendary race was won by the Jaguar D Type. Just 71 D Type were manufactured and 18 of these were Jaguar works racing cars. More pictures and informations here

- Mercedes Benz 300 SLR 1955 |
A Formula 1 racing car for the road - that's what the Mercedes Benz 300 SLR coupé is. Based on the Formula 1 single seater with a 2,5 l engine, a total of ten of these 300 SLR sports cars were built in 1955, the biggest difference as against the Formula 1 racing car being - apart from the two seater body- a 3 l straight eight engine with direct fuel injection. The light alloy engine produced 300 hp - enough to win a sensational victory in the first race, the 1955 Mille Miglia, and enough to win the Sports Car World Championship in 1955. - Mazda 787B 1991 - Le Mans winner with Rotary Piston Engine |
Mazda, in 1991, became the first Japanese automaker to win the 24 Hours Le Mans endurance race. They were well-prepared, had taken the development from the aluminium to carbon-fibre chassis and from the good old triple rotary piston engine to the 750 hp four rotor unit. They had also signed up the great Jacky Ickx, not only as figure-head but as an expert whose advices were taken very seriously. Nevertheless, the Match of the Year 1991 was presumably between Mercedes and Jaguar with additional spice thrown in from Porsche and Peugeot. The rotary piston engine Mazda was the clear outsider. Not least because the rotary piston engine had to last the 24 Hour duration using the same amount of fuel (2.550 litres for 24 hours) as its reciprocating piston engine rivals, who in turn had no idea that Mazda had found a solution to minimize the thirst of its rotary piston engine. - Mercedes W 196 F1 – 1954 – 1955 – World Champion |
In early 1953 the then Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler-Benz AG, Fritz Könecke, formulated the grand goal for the resumption of international racing activities: Mercedes-Benz should capture the double world championship in 1954, in the Formula One and for sports car, with factory drivers.
In the second European race of the season, the French Grand Prix, the new Silver Arrows took the start for the first time. In training the fully faired W 196 R had posted the fastest time, and now, at their racing debut on the 4th of July in Reims, they would exceed all expectations of the public and the competition. The newly engaged Argentinean driver Juan Manuel Fangio and Karl Kling won a double victory in their streamlined monoposto cars. This sensational success also had historic implications, for exactly 40 years earlier, on 4 July 1914, Mercedes racing cars won the French Grand Prix in Lyon... ..More informations and pictures here |

4 - Land Speed Record Vehicles
|
Land Speed Record Vehicles shows a collection of automobiles built specifically over the years with the purpose of breaking land speed records. In this category we can mention the 1911 FIAT S76 GP or the 1965 Peugeot 504 Diesel Record. The 1905 200 HP Darracq was powered by a 24.452 cc V8 with a minimum of components to limit the weight at 900 kg. The car is claimed to have reached a speed of 175 km/h (109.65 mph). The FIAT S76 Record had a 28.353 cc four cylinder engine given for 290 hp at 1900 rpm but the car weighed 1650 kg (3647 lb.) and speed record was blurred by deficient measuring equipment. See Car Review for further informations.
The 1913 200 hp Benz allowed L.G. Hornsted to reach 196.38 km/h (122.05 mph) over 2 miles with a modified Blitzen Benz propelled by a 21.5 Litre (1312c.i.) four cylinder engine. The 1922 Sumbeam 350 was equipped with a 18.3 Litre (1116 ci) V12 aero engine and the curb weight was announced for 1,550 kg (3,417 lb.). Malcolm Campbel broke his first speed record at 222.22 km/h (138.08 mph) .
The 1926 Thomas Special Babs also known as Chitty Bang Bang 4 Higham Special was propelled by a 450 hp Liberty 27 Litre V12 aero engine. According to Wikipedia, Parry-Thomas used the car to break the land speed record at 273.6 km/h (171.02 mph)
The 1933 Napier Railton Special had a 530 hp 23.970 cc Napier Lion W12 aero engine. The Wikipedia Encyclopedia teaches us that the car estiblished seven land speed records before World War II.
The 1965 Peugeot 404 Diesel Record is a Peugeot convertible transformed in a single seat vehicle and propelled by a 1948 cc Diesel engine. It was aimed at promoting Diesel engine for passenger cars at a time when it was essentially dedicated to taxis or commercial vehicles. . |

- Fiat S76 Record 1911
|
In 1911, FIAT also produced the FIAT S76 as a one-off record vehicle to challenge the speed record of the Blitzen Benz ( 212 kph or 131,7 mph).
The Fiat S76 car had one of the largest capacity engine in an automobile. The 28.353 cc four cylinder engine is made up of two blocks of two cylinders and produces 290 hp at 1900 rpm. The engine bore is 190 mm and the stroke is 250 mm. In fact the volume of one cylinder is so huge that three spark plugs are installed in each one in order to get even combustion. The transmission is by chain with a multi disc clutch and a four-speed gearbox commanded by a side gear lever. The suspensions are at front and rear with rigid axle and semi-elliptic springs.More informations and pictures here |

- Peugeot 404 Diesel Record 1965 |
Since 1921, Peugeot started developping and testing diesel engines in the Lille’s manufacture. A 2 cylinders – 2 stroke is mounted on a « Peugeot Type 156 » which achieves the Paris-Bordeaux-Paris with a speed up to 70km/h. But it could not be sold because the french law did not autorize the use of disesel fuel as a source of energy for individuals cars.
In 1936, Sochaux finalizes a diesel engine with a conception similar to the fuel version engine of the 402. It is used on commercial vehicles of medium weight. Its adaption to the limousine 402 in 1939 used by taxis is stopped by World War II. It is in 1959 that the first french sedan diesel engine appears in series production. From then, almost all types of car produced by Peugeot are available in diesel or fuel engine making the brand a world leader in this motorization... ...More informations and pictures here
