For a traditional week end in April the glorious grounds of the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este and Villa Erba in Cernobbio on Lake Como were turned into a unique platform for the most beautiful automobiles from the past and the boldest concept cars of the present. First held in 1929 at the same location, the Concorso d’Eleganza ranks as one of the world’s most famous event of its kind.
For eight years now the Concorso d’Eleganza has been held under the patronage of the BMW Group. |

1 - Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 B Berlinetta Touring 1938
Some fifty historic cars in utmost condition were registered for the Concorso d’Eleganza and competed in eight different categories, according to the year of production and body style. The Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 B Berlinetta Touring 1938 presented by Jon Shirley of the United States, accumulated the Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este best of the show with the Trofeo BMW Group, the Trofeo BMW Group Italia as well as Class Winner for the Prewar Closed Cars.
Only 40 8C 2900 B were produced by Alfa Romeo and delivered as chassis with engine ready to be fitted with a body manufactured by selected coachbuilders. The engine is a 8 cylinder 2905 cc.

2 - Aston Martin One 77
Eight automobiles competed for the Roll of Honor 2009 Design Award for Concept cars and Prototypes. The Aston Martin One 77 was selected by Public Referendum on occasion of its World Premiere appearance. Only 77 cars are to be produced at around 1,2 million Euros a piece; the car is hand made with carbon fiber structure and body panels allowing a total weight around 1500 kg . The 7,3 liter V12 engine produces 700 bhp and over 750 Nm.

3 - Bugatti 100 Years - Bugatti Veyron, Type 13 Brescia 1914 and Type 57 Atalante 1935
Besides these registered entries, several historic cars and prototypes were presented during the Event.
Bugatti had a special exhibit of historic vehicles together with four one off Veyron with a unique finish dedicated each to a famous Bugatti racing drivers of the glorious times of the marque Jean Pierre Wimille, Achille Varzi, Malcolm Campbell and Hermann zu Leiningen.
Besides the blue Veyron one off JP Wimille with a W16 engine producing 1000 hp, we show the Type 13 Brescia 1914, 4 cylinder 1500 cc engine producing 40 hp at 4200 rpm and a Type 57 Atalante 1935 with an 8 cylinder 3257 cc engine producing 135 hp at 5000 rpm.

Carrozzeria Zagato showed its latest prototype Perana Z One to illustrate the 90th anniversary of a family tradition.

6 - Lexus Infiniti Essence Hybrid Concept
Infiniti introduced its Essence Hybrid Concept for its first 20 years as a manufacturer of premium automobile. The coupe is offering a glimpse at what customers can expect in the future. The Infiniti Essence is a 600 hp coupe with a petrol/electric hybrid propulsion at rear wheels.

7 - BMW GINA Concept
BMW exposed several historic cars as well as its latest Concept GINA Light as guest of honor. Besides original design the BMW GINA concept has a practically seamless outer skin made of an elastic textile material that is stretched over a moveable frame.

8 - BMW 3/15 PS DA4 saloon and 1937 BMW 328
Within the historic cars exhibition we selected the 1931 BMW 3/15 PS DA4 saloon and the 1937 BMW 328 with a streamline body by Wendler that allowed a top speed of 175 kph.

9 - Chevrolet Corvette Mantide ZR1 Restyled by Bertone
Stile BERTONE introduced its latest work that is a one off super car based on a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1; The futuristic styling has been developed in aerodynamic wind tunnel and the body is made of carbon fiber for a lighter weight. This car was produced on special order by a customer whose identity has not been revealed.

10 - Ital Design Mindset electric car Concept
The MINDSET is a project of new concept of electric car. Its original design is a lightweight, powerful and efficient commuter for everyday use. This electric car is equipped with lithium ion batteries allowing a range of 180 km with a top speed governed at 140 kph. A supplementary petrol engine driving a generator is to be offered as a range extender and will boost the range to 800 km. 0 to 100 kph quoted in 7 seconds. The Mindset is made is Switzerland.

Mention of Honor went to the Mercedes 500K Cabriolet Spezial A 1936 presented by Alexander Schaufler from Austria. This car has a 8 cylinder engine of 4984 cc and the body was built at the Daimler Benz plant in Sinddelfingen. |

Class B – Prewar Closed cars
The Class Winner is the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Berlinetta Touring presented above as overall winner of Coppa d’Oro. The mention of Honor goes to the Bugatti 57S Atalante 1938 introduced by Gil Nobble of the United Kingdom. This car has an 8 cylinder 3257 cc engine.
This Bugatti also won the Trofeo Auto and Design for the most exciting design selected by the Jury.
In the same Class, we find the Rolls Royce Phantom I Sedan Town Car 1933 of Walter Steinemann from Switzerland. The engine is a 6 cylinder 7668 cc.

Bentley 8 liter Sportsman Coupé 1931
Also worth mentioning is the Bentley 8 liter Sportsman Coupé 1931 with body by Gurney Nutting and engine of 6 cylinder 7983 cc. that car won the Special Prize of the Jury Trofeo Banque Baring Brothers Sturdza.
The Rolls Royce Phantom I Sports Saloon Hooper 1925 entered by Norbert Seeger in this Class won the Trofeo Rolls Royce for the most elegant Rolls Royce by the Jury. The engine is a 6 cylinder 7668 cc.

The Class Winner is a Auburn 852SC Speedster 1936 entered by Andrew Pisker from United Kingdom. This car is propelled by an 8 cylinder engine 4558 cc.

Rolls Royce took the benefit of the Concorso d’Eleganza to show the Rolls Royce Hyperion Cabriolet, a one off car prepared by Pinin Farina at the request of a client on the base of a Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé.
