Porsche 904 1964 – 1967
In 1962, the immensely talented Ferdinand A. “Butzi” Porsche was tasked with designing a new two-seat competition coupé that could also be driven on the street by utilising the mid-engine chassis configuration that had proven so successful with the racing department’s lightweight spyders.
Porsche introduced in 1964 the mid engined 904. According to FIA GT regulation road version were built for qualification of racing cars. Body was fiberglass bonded to the steel chassis. Original 904 were propulsed by a flat four while later versions benefitted a flat six.
The beautifully balanced 904 GTS would enjoy a brilliant inaugural season, scoring victories at Sebring, the Targa Florio, Spa, the Nürburgring 1000 KM, the 24 Hours of Le Mans (a 1-4 class sweep), the 12 Hours of Reims, the Coppa Inter-Europa, the Tour de France, the Bridgehampton 500 KM, and the 1000 KM of Paris.
In 2011 at Gooding and Company Pebble Beach Auction, one 1964 Porsche Carrera GTS was sold for US$ 1.210.000.
In 2011 at Scottsdale Gooding and Company Auction, one 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS was sold for US$ 1.045.000.
In 2014 at Paris RM Auction, one 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS with Carrera four-cam flat-four engine was sold for Euros 1.288.000.
In 2015 at Paris RM Auction, one Porsche 904 Carrera GTS was sold for Euros 1.428.000
