4 - Porsche Boxster E Plug in Electric research vehicle 2011

Porsche has unveiled its latest research vehicle to the public for the very first time at the 2011 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show – the all-electric drive Boxster E. In the wake of the GT3 R Hybrid, 918 Spyder and 918 RSR, the mid-engine prototype is yet another sports car concept exhibiting the brand’s characteristic combination of research and driving pleasure.
The Boxster E, with two electric motors (one on the front axle and one on the rear axle), runs on purely electric power with four-wheel drive and is equivalent to a Boxster S in terms of driving dynamics. Together with two other Boxster E research vehicles, in which one electric motor drives only the rear wheels, the prototype is being used to explore the everyday practicability of all-electric vehicles and how they are used, especially in terms of driving and battery charging. What the researchers are after is an understanding of the requirements facing future products, where to go next with Porsche Intelligent Performance and how to integrate electric vehicles into the infrastructure.
The lithium iron phosphate-based traction battery is fitted in place of the combustion engine. Each of its cells has a nominal voltage of 3.3 volts and an individual capacity of 20 Ah. Based on the NEDC, the combined energy from 440 individual cells is good for approximately 170 kilometres of driving pleasure in the Boxster E with its ready-for-the-road weight of a mere 1,600 kg. The two motors enable the two-seater to sprint to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds from a standing start. Its top speed is limited to 200 km/h. 9 - Volkswagen NILS Research Vehicle Concept 2011

Volkswagen AG is presenting a car for the urban world of tomorrow at the 64th International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt: NILS. The single-seat electric vehicle reflects a new, fascinating form of minimalist mobility. The concept car – with its progressive aluminium space frame, wing doors and free-standing wheels – exhibits a high level of dynamic performance, yet travels with zero emissions and silently towards the future. The project is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development.
Many Volkswagen Group models in the higher vehicle classes are already available with hybrid drives, where the electric motor supports the conventional drive system. This emissions-reducing drive technology is now breaking into high-volume segments.Golf with E-drive debuts in 2013. The first high-volume models with a pure electric drive will soon reach production readiness; the Golf, one of the best-selling car in the world, will debut with an electric drive (Blue-e-Motion) in 2013. The NILS concept is a very compact car that requires extremely little space in traffic. NILS is only 3.04 metres long, making it about 50 cm shorter than the new Volkswagen up! The width of the NILS, from wheel to wheel, is 1.39 metres; the body itself measures only 0.86 metres wide. The concept car is 1.2 metres tall. By means of comparison: a Porsche 911 is taller at 1.31 metres.
Although, or even because, NILS is so compact and lightweight (460 kg), it is a lot of fun to drive. It is an agile car with a top speed of 130 km/h, and it can accelerate to 100 km/h in less than 11 seconds. This is accomplished by an electric motor with a reasonably small 15 kW nominal power and short-term peak power of 25 kW. A lithium-ion battery supplies the electric motor with energy. The battery capacity (5.3 kWh) enables driving ranges of up to 65 km, depending on the style of driving. A battery of this size is relatively inexpensive, and its capacity is sufficient for this type of car. The research vehicle can be charged either via a conventional 230 Volt electrical outlet (maximum charging time 2 hours) or at an electric vehicle charging station. The plug port is located at the back underneath the rear lighting module. For further information and illustration visit Cadillac Ciel Hybrid Concept 2011 inside autoconcept-reviews.

10 - Citroen Tubik Hybrid4 Concept 2011

The Citroen Tubik Hybrid4 Concept, a 9-seater vehicle whose styling and characteristics reflect the prestige cues of a modern saloon. Tubik was inspired by CITROËN’s renowned Type H, fondly referred to by the general public as the “TUB” (the name of its predecessor). CITROËN design teams gave Tubik distinctive, offbeat styling, with colours and materials that aim to meet the highest standards in sophistication and comfort.
The design lines of Tubik are a nod to the CITROËN TUB (from the French acronym for low front-wheel drive commercial vehicle) and its ingenious upgrade, the CITROËN Type H, whose versatility and style made it a best-seller of its times (half a million units in 34 years on the market). Sporting a similar body shape to its illustrious predecessor, Tubik is big enough (2.08m wide, 2.05m tall, 4.80m long) to carry up to nine passengers.
The front end, which stands apart from the main body, brings to mind the corrugated metal of the CITROËN Type H with its ribbing, while the windscreen pillars are reminiscent of the Type H’s two characteristic ridges.
To make Tubik look even more protective, CITROËN designers combined two contrasting colours: the metal grey of the body shell envelops the pearlescent white at either end, marking the position of the combustion engine (at the front) and electric motor (at the rear) used by the full-hybrid diesel drive train. - Renault Frendzy Electric Concept 2011

Laurens van den Acker, Senior Vice President, Design Renault: “FRENDZY is the fourth vehicle to illustrate Renault’s new design strategy, a series which started with DeZir. FRENDZY takes an original and innovative stance on the world of light commercial vehicles - a key part of Renault’s activities”.
Renault’s latest concept car has a dual personality. These days, professional and personal lives are so intricately interwoven that drivers find themselves permanently channel-hopping between one world and the other. The role of FRENDZY is to be a partner that takes the strain out of this lifestyle. Axel Breun, Design Director, Concept and Show Cars:“FRENDZY is the must-have vehicle for flexibility and versatility. It is efficient and modern as a work tool, yet sporting and warmly welcoming for the family”.
Like DeZir, which was unveiled at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, FRENDZY is an electric vehicle. As for FRENDZY’s powertrain, it is the same as that of Kangoo Z.E., although the charging point - located under the Renault logo at the front of the vehicle - is identical to that on ZOE Preview. 12 - Audi A2 Electric Concept 2011

The electric Audi A2 concept is a classic space concept: a premium vehicle for metropolitan areas featuring generous amounts of space and composed road manners.
An innovative body technology – a further development of Audi’s ultra-lightweight construction – limits its weight to just 1,150 kilograms (2,535.32 lb). Audi connect technologies provide an Internet connection; the steering and brakes are purely electric (by-wire) systems.
The Audi A2 concept is a purely electric vehicle. The lithium-ion battery mounted in the sandwich floor stores 31 kWh of energy, 24 kWh of which are usable. The electric motor is transversely mounted in the front of the vehicle. It delivers 85 kW (116 hp) of peak power (60 kW continuous) and 270 Nm (199.14 lb-ft) of torque (160 Nm (118.01 lb-ft continuous) to the front wheels via a single-speed transmission.
The Audi technology study has a range of 200 km (124.27 miles) in the European driving cycle. It takes roughly 1.5 hours to fully recharge the battery with 400 volt three-phase current and approximately four hours with 230 volt household current. The Audi A2 concept is also designed for the new contactless charging technology (Audi Wireless Charging). 13 - Volkswagen Up! Series of 6 Concept Cars 2011

In order to celebrate the introduction on the market of the new Volkswagen Up!, the Company has presented several concept cars that (represents possible variation on the original model.

- Volkswagen Cross up! concept – the up! for big city driving
Near production. The up! family continues with the cross up!. It is also still a concept car, but it demonstrates three aspects very clearly:
1. How the four-door up! will look.
2. What the four-door up! might look like in a cross up! version.
3. That Volkswagen will be expanding its successful Cross programme over more models. Cross models that are currently available are the CrossPolo, CrossGolf and CrossTouran. Cross stands for customised and especially rugged Volkswagen designs with rugged lifestyle qualities.
Volkswagen Cross up! concept – the up! for big city driving Volkswagen Cross up! concept – the up! for big city driving

- Volkswagen GT up! concept– the up! for the fast roads

Agility. Volkswagen will offer the new up! with engines whose power only ranges up to 55 kW / 75 PS. That makes sense, because the up! is primarily driven in the urban world. However, the car design could handle much more power. And that too can be desirable. Showing how such a more powerful up! might appear is the highly dynamic GT up!.
Conceivably, its engine could have a power of 100 PS. Such an engine would offer drivers of the barely 900 kg GT up! more affordable driving fun than hardly any other vehicle. This would be very much in the style of the ancestor of the sporty small car – the first generation GTI. When an I is added for injection, its identifier refers to the Volkswagen icon. And the GT up! is performing on the same playing field.

Volkswagen GT up! concept– the up! for the fast roads Volkswagen GT up! concept– the up! for the fast roads

- Volkswagen eco up! concept– the up! for clean natural gas.

EcoFuel. At the 2011 IAA, Volkswagen is presenting an up! which – thanks to its natural gas engine (EcoFuel) and BlueMotion Technology (Stop / Start system and battery regeneration) – emits just 79 g / km CO2, a new best value in CO2 emissions: the eco up!. So far, no one has documented such low emissions in a small car with CNG natural gas drive.
Moreover, this fuel offers tremendous advantages: natural gas engines are very clean and receive favourable taxation benefits in such countries as Germany. When used in the smallest vehicle class, natural gas drives – besides achieving these best values in emissions – are significantly more economical than hybrid systems that are unrealistically expensive in the small car segment. So, even though the natural gas version of the eco up! with BlueMotion Technology is still a concept car at this IAA, by the time of next year’s IAA it will have long been on the road as a production vehicle.

Volkswagen eco up! concept– the up! for clean natural gas.
- Volkswagen e-up! concept – the up! for zero emissions driving.

Enlightening. It has been decided: a production version of the e-up! will be launched on the market in 2013. At the IAA in 2011, Volkswagen is already presenting a near production study of this zero-emissions car. It has a distinctive identifying characteristic at its front end: the arc-shaped layout of the LED daytime running lights in the bumper.
Of technical interest: on the e-up!, the upper engine cooling air slot – a slot between the headlights and the VW logo – is fully covered by an elegant chrome trim strip. That is because narrow air intake slots above and below the licence plate suffice to cool the drive system of the e-up! that is painted in the colour “planet blue metallic”. Silent. Supplying the propulsive power for the concept car, which can reach a top speed of 135 km / h, is an electric motor with a peak power of 60 kW (continuous power:
40 kW). As is typical of electric motors, the nearly silent motor develops a high maximum torque of 210 Newton metres from a stand still.

- Volkswagen buggy up! concept– the up! for endless summer.

Freedom. A buggy is more than just a car; it is an automotive lifestyle feeling. It was born in California in the 1960s and was based on the Beetle, which provided the engine and the chassis. The rest was created by buggy pioneers such as American Bruce Meyers: out of GRP, or glass-reinforced plastics. Buggies have had a cult following that continues to today. That is reason enough for Volkswagen to now present a 21st century buggy concept based on the new up!: the buggy up!. This buggy is not made of GRP, but instead of strong, high-tech, lightweight construction steels. Yet, the conceptual approach for developing the two-seater, as original as it is, still follows the lead of historic models from California Openness. The (reinforced) underbody, running gear and drive technology of the up! were kept, while the roof-less exterior skin of the body was completely redesigned, and the ride height was lowered by 20 mm. Nonetheless, the design of the buggy up! with its headlights, the position of the VW badge – and signature trait of the front bumper that appears to smile – all tie the car to the two-door up!. Yet, everything is different: the bonnet is built much flatter, the bumpers show an independent character, the roof is not just clipped off, rather it takes its idea from small convertible sports cars. The rear section was also completely redesigned. This is logical, because the buggy up! does not have a boot like the “normal” up!, nor does it have any C-pillars. However, it is immediately recognisable as an up! by its rear lights, which are like a reflection of the headlights. Practical: the bootlid is constructed of two pieces; the main part of the lid lifts upward like a classic bootlid, but the section above the bumper folds down, like the tailgate on a pick-up. And this makes it extremely easy to stow even heavy and bulky items. On top of the lid, there are also tie-down straps for a set of luggage.

Volkswagen buggy up! concept– the up! for endless summer. Volkswagen buggy up! concept– the up! for endless summer.
- Volkswagen up! azzurra sailing team concept

The up! with a Mediterranean soul. The up! azzurra sailing team was created by Italian designers Giorgetto Giugiaro and Walter de Silva. Giugiaro and de Silva both grew up in nautical environments. And it was in this environment that the up! azzurra sailing team was created – a prototype of an open, small, eco-friendly automobile for the world’s marinas.
Giorgetto Giugiaro, born in Garessio – a town near the Ligurian coast where the sea breezes blow strong – and Walter de Silva – born in Lecco on Lake Como – have extended the potential range of the New Small Family here to include a nautical version. The prototype’s name comes from
a yacht club on the Costa Smeralda. The up! azzurra sailing team retains the original character of the up! with its precise and appealing lines. Yet the concept vehicle is completely open – there are no doors or roof. This lets the driver and passengers enjoy the summer breezes, as if they were aboard a boat.

14 - Peugeot HX1 Hybrid4 Concept 2011

The Peugeot HX1 Concept 2011 has been designed with an MPV (Multiple Purpose Vehicle) architecture with unique dimensions: low (1.373 m) and wide (1.990 m overall) for a length of 4.954 m.
The designers have carried out an extreme job on the car’s aerodynamics. When stationary and at low speeds, the HX1’s styling makes it appear sculpted from a solid form as the moving parts have been adapted to optimise air flow and to enhance the car’s environmental performance. The seven vanes in each wheel rim spike, fashioned like a turbine, open to create a flat disc surface. At the same time, a spoiler and two side skirts located at the top of the tailgate are deployed above 100 km/h (62.1mph). When moving, the HX1 therefore adapts itself “physically” to its environment.
The vehicle has a Cd of 0.28; an outstanding value for a vehicle with an MPV silhouette.
Under the bonnet of the HX1, the engine is a 150 kW (204 hp) 2.2 litre HDi diesel, linked to an automatic 6-speed gearbox; the same powertrain as that used on the 508’s range-topping GT version. Coupled with a 70 kW (95 bhp) electric motor, the combined output can develop a potential 220 kW (299 bhp).
However, one of Peugeot’s priorities is to maintain its position as environmental leader in the years to come. The HX1 therefore takes us one step further. It is equipped with “plug-in” functionality: the lithium-ion batteries can be recharged by ‘plugging in’ the vehicle to a standard 240 V mains electric socket. This means that it can have a longer “ZEV” range, i.e.: it can cover up to 30 km (18.6 miles) in all-electric drive mode. The HX1 thus obtains a combined fuel consumption of just 3.2 litre/100 km with CO2 emissions of 83 g/km. 16 - Land Rover DC100 & DC100 Sport Concept for 2015

“The entire Land Rover team is excited about the opportunity, and the responsibility, of creating the replacement for the iconic Land Rover Defender. Loved the world over for its simple, honest and distinctive design, we are determined that the new Defender will be true to its heritage while meeting the requirements of a changing global market. We plan to engage with existing and potential customers to help us finalize the details of the new vehicle.  One thing's for sure, it's going to be an exciting journey, and we can't wait to get going.”declared John Edwards, Global Brand Director, Land Rover.
For over 60 years, Land Rover has been designing and building 4x4s that define capability, versatility and usability. Like no other vehicle, the Defender inspires affection and loyalty the world over. It is an eminently adaptable vehicle, serving people under all conditions whether they are explorers, ecologists, UN aid workers or Red Cross medics.
From just two principal platforms, the Defender has been put to every task and reconfigured in every way, from fire engines to tracked exploration vehicles. The only limit to the abilities of a Defender is the imagination of its owner. An estimated three-quarters of the nearly two million Defender models built are still in use.
The next chapter in the Defender story was unfolded at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. The two DC100 concepts unveiled there will build on the essential elements of Defender and allow Land Rover to discuss and inspire dreams of a future Defender.
The concepts are based on an advanced mixed-alloy platform, and represent the flexibility of design and use inherent in this very capable platform. An eight-speed transmission and a transfer case provide a wide spread of high and low ratios for on and off-road driving.
Also showcased is the next generation of Land Rover all-terrain technology. Building on the acclaimed Terrain Response® system, these systems work seamlessly together to reduce the workload on the driver by identifying potential hazards and advising safer routes to avoid them. An advanced telematics program unites the systems and allows vehicle to smartphone communication.
“These could not be designs from any other company. Defender became a global icon because of the integrity of both its design and engineering. In creating these concepts, we took the functional design cues from the past and reinterpreted them for the 21st century. These studies represent our thoughts on how we will forge an entirely new generation of Defender models which will prove that design can work in harmony with function.” said Gerry McGovern, Design Director, Land Rover.

24 - Chevrolet 100th years Concept Miray 2011

First unveiled to a larger public at the Seoul Motor Show in March this year, the Chevrolet Miray (Korean for 'future') roadster concept offers a fresh interpretation of typical Chevrolet design cues while paying tribute to the brand's sports car heritage.
The Miray has an aerodynamic fuselage reminiscent of modern jet fighters, with a wedged body side made of carbon fiber and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP). Its dual-port grille is flanked by LED headlamps with new signature daytime running lamps. Designers took a unique approach to displaying information inside the car, using back projection on the instrument panel.
The Miray's "mid-electric" propulsion system, located primarily behind and beneath the driver, has been engineered to maximize performance and fuel efficiency. Its two front-mounted 15 kW electric motors are powered by a 1.6 kWh lithium-ion battery which is charged through regenerative braking energy. A 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo-charged engine mounted behind the cockpit combines with the electric motors for performance driving.
