Previous Geneve Motor Show reviews : 2016 - 2015 - 2014 - 2013 - 2012 - 2011 - 2010 - 2009 - 2008

The 87th Geneva International Motor Show was outstanding, with a large number of new models, the traditional presentation of design studies and a variety of technical innovations. Once again there was a large number of new generation production models. The interesting collection of  exotic high performance cars and concept cars is a unique feature of the Geneva Motor Show. Several extreme cars proposed propulsion with maximum output well over 1000 hp. Electric Drive is an ever more frequent proposition for a majority of manufacturers. New Electric car projects include a three seats Techrules, Hybrid Kynetic and Vanda Dendrobium. New proposition from Airbus and Ital Design tends to define future solution for autonomous mobility in large cities.

In Grand Touring automobiles, Geneva was the occasion of several world premiere like the Ferrari 812 Superfast, the Aston Martin AMR Rapide and Vantage, the new McLaren 720S or the exotic Aston Martin Valkyrie.

A wide selection by Tuning companies allowed to visualize some possibilities of individual presentation for grand touring cars.

Racing cars from the past and present are always part of the exhibit and this year Ford, in particular, offered a great selection of racing machines.

We are introducing here a wide selection of automobiles exhibited at Geneva Palexpo

- Aston Martin Valkyrie Project

Aston Martin Valkyrie Project Aston Martin Valkyrie Project

March 2017, Gaydon: The revolutionary hypercar being co-developed by Aston Martin and Red Bull Advanced Technologies, formerly identified by its codename AM-RB 001, has now been officially named the Aston Martin Valkyrie.

The name continues a fine tradition of Aston Martin ‘V’ cars. This began back in 1951 with Vantage, which was selected as a name to distinguish high performance variants of the then current model, the DB2. Boasting 125bhp versus 105bhp for the standard engine, the Vantage represented a significant increase in performance and desirability. The first time the Vantage badge appeared was on the side of the DB5.

The Aston Martin and Red Bull projects was introduced for the first time in Eurpe and is in full scale model configuration. There are still limited information on this future supercar.

See Aston Martin and Red Bull RB001 Concept 2016 for further details and illustrations.

- Ferrari 812 Superfast

Ferrari 812 Superfast Ferrari 812 Superfast

For the 70th anniversary of the Company, Ferrari introduced one of the most powerfull berlinetta ever produced. The Ferrari 812 Superfast’s exceptionally futuristic, finely-honed lines also, however, clothe Prancing Horse power at its rawest, as an entirely new 12-cylinder engine of unprecedented efficiency and might was designed for the car.

That engine’s output has been boosted by 60 cv compared to the F12berlinetta, so that it unleashes a massive 800 CV, making the 812 Superfast the most powerful and fastest road-going Ferrari ever built (with the exception, of course, of the mid-rear-engined, special limited-series 12-cylinders). The 812 Superfast thus ushers in a new era in Ferrari 12-cylinder history, in doing so, building on the invaluable legacies of the F12berlinetta and F12tdf.

Claimed maximum speed is 340 km/h and 0-100 km/h should be attained in 2.9 seconds.

- Ital Design Zerouno

Following the exhibit of the Ital Design Concept at Geneva in 2016, a few customers required the possibility to buy such a car derived from Audi R8 and Lamborghini Hurakan.  Ital Design decided to manufacture a serie of five cars  adjusted to customers requirements.

Limiting the final weight of the car as far as possible in order to ensure exceptional performances by equally emphasising the carbon fibre and aluminium chassis and the powerful V10 5.2 naturally aspired engine was the objective defined right from the start of this project. This is why the entire bodywork is in carbon fibre. The same material is also generously used inside the cockpit; the state of the art in fibre layering technology, together with the skills of craftsmen during the finishing stages, combined to achieve a light weight - despite the car measuring 4847 mm in length and 1970 mm in width by 1204 mm in height.

“We put it our best skills into the production of the first car – Massimo Bovi, Head of Pre-Series Center and Production, added – using some of the finest productions methods and engaging our high skilled workers. At the same time we engaged deeply in the latest technologies in electric and electronics. Therefore this first car is showcasing our expertise gained in our history”.

Five Ital Design Zerouno are scheduled for production and four are already sold as of the opening day of the Geneva Show. Base price is announced at 1.5 Million Euros excluding taxes.

-TECHRULES Ren Turbine Range Extender Electric Supercar Project

Techrules is starting the final production design of its first series hybrid supercar at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. ‘Ren’ is the first production vehicle from the China-based automotive research and development company, and features its proprietary Turbine-Recharging Electric Vehicle (TREV) technology.

The aerospace-inspired design is optimised for aerodynamic efficiency, with a striking modular three-cockpit design that has been crafted by world-renowned automotive designers, Fabrizio and Giorgetto Giugiaro. A sense of drama is assured by the distinctive fighter jet-style canopy that rises up to enable occupant access and futuristic elements such as the front laser headlights and ‘star-burst’ reversing LEDs.

The Ren features a lightweight chassis that has been designed and constructed to the highest standards by esteemed motorsport specialist, L.M. Gianetti of Turin. The performance-focused modular layout that allows the car to be configured with one, two or three polycarbonate canopies: one for track use by only the driver, two for the ‘Le Mans’ configuration with a single passenger, or three to accommodate the driver and two passengers.

A variety of configurations will be available to tailor the powertrain to the exact requirements of the customer. The flagship version – with a battery capacity of 25 kWh and with two motors at the front and four at the rear – delivers maximum power of 960kW (1,287 hp/1,305 ps) with a range of 1,170 km from 80 litres of diesel fuel (NEDC).

TECHRULES Ren Turbine Range Extender Electric Supercar Project TECHRULES Ren Turbine Range Extender Electric Supercar Project

William Jin, the founder and CEO of Techrules, said: “Thanks to the unique modular design of the Ren chassis and powertrain, we have a perfectly engineered vehicle to deliver our TREV technology in the most efficient way, according to the exact requirements of the customer. Techrules is introducing a luxury electric supercar with great dynamic performance that is more environmentally friendly and more convenient than anything comparable on the market today.”

"Techrules’ advanced luxury supercar will provide an exclusive band of customers with a unique blend of ultimate performance, brutal power and unparalleled efficiency. Beyond the Ren, the innovative powertrain and platform concept will support family and city cars, with the potential for many more model variations. "

TECHRULES Ren Turbine Range Extender Electric Supercar Project TECHRULES Ren Turbine Range Extender Electric Supercar Project

The first rule for Giorgetto and Fabrizio Giugiaro and their Turin-based GFG Style design team, when designing Ren, was to achieve excellent aerodynamic function. None of the surfaces are designed with only styling in mind - all the lines and changes of surface have an aerodynamic purpose.
At the front, large outboard air intakes draw air into the wheel arches to cool the 380mm carbon ceramic front brakes. Front lighting employs LED laser technology set into the edges of the large front intakes, along with animated direction indicators.

The depth of the front fenders above the wheels is as small as possible to reduce the frontal area, with vertical side panels and a squared-off rear reducing drag. The side of the car is smooth and simple, and in combination with the overall aerodynamic design elements, produces a pure, flowing profile.

Toyota i-Trill Electric Concept - Toyota’s vision on urban mobility in 2030

Developed by Toyota Motors Europe (TME) in collaboration with the company’s ED² design studio in Nice, the new i-TRIL Concept showcases numerous innovative aspects of Toyota’s research into ever better and more engaging environmentally- friendly mobility solutions.

Making its world debut at the 2017 Geneva motor show, and featuring Active Lean technology, the new i-TRIL concept represents a viable alternative to A and B segment cars, other EV products, public transport and motorcycles.

With its One-plus-Two seating layout, the i-TRIL redefines interior space and spaciousness. Current interior design philosophy hinges on everything being built around the driver, with rear seat passengers very much regarded as second class citizens.

Allied to the vehicle’s Active Lean technology, the i-TRIL interior allows the rear bench seat passengers to become much more involved in the driving experience.

Driven by electric motor power and weighing just 600 kg the i-TRIL is some 2,830 mm long and 1,460 mm high. It features 1,200 mm front and 600 mm rear track widths, with a hinge between the rear axle and cabin allowing the vehicle body and front tyres to lean whilst the motorised rear tyres remain perpendicular to the road surface at all times.

With the front wheels and fenders clearly separated from the main bodyshell to facilitate the leaning of both the former and the latter, the cabin consists of a smooth, dark, cocoon-like central mass with no belt-line or door handles.

During autonomous driving, the left- or right-hand instrument panel extremities automatically illuminate whenever the i-TRIL is about to enter a corner, letting all occupants know which way the cabin is about to lean.

-Quant 48 Volt by nanoFlowcell Holdings

The low-voltage electric drive in the QUANT 48VOLT is fed by the nanoFlowcell® flow cell - a battery concept that is still unique in the automotive industry and unknown in the development departments of car makers worldwide. In Europe, research in the field of flow cell technology languishes in neglect. However, at nanoFlowcell - and elsewhere in the world - the potential of fuel cell technology has been recognised and not just in the design of electric drives for super sports cars.

Many visitors to the QUANT stand at the show are surprised to find out that the QUANT
48VOLT and QUANTiNO 48VOLT are merely technology ambassadors for nanoFlowcell® technology and that the R&D company does not intend to build these cars in series production.

nanoFlowcell Holdings wants to convince established automakers of the concept behind the nanoFlowcell® 48VOLT low-voltage drive. An energy technology that can help electric mobility achieve its breakthrough - electric drive without forfeiting performance, without expensive and heavy batteries and without range extenders. An energy technology that is clean, environmentally responsible and cost-efficient.

-Ital Design Airbus Pop Up Urban Autonomous Mobility Project

Ital Design Airbus Pop Up Urban Autonomous Mobility Project Ital Design Airbus Pop Up Urban Autonomous Mobility Project

During the 87th Geneva International Motor Show, Italdesign and Airbus worldpremiered Pop.Up, the first modular, fully electric, zero emission concept vehicle system designed to relieve traffic congestion in crowded megacities. Pop.Up envisages a modular system for multi-modal transportation that makes full use of both ground and airspace.
The feasible concept is the result of Italdesign and Airbus’ joint reflection on how to address the mobility challenges of megacities achievable for a majority, which has become one of the most pressing issues for commuters in megacities worldwide. With traffic congestion projected to hugely increase by 2030, the companies decided to combine their engineering expertise to tackle how to best achieve a sustainable, modular and multimodal urban mobility system - giving rise to the Pop.Up concept.
Pop.Up System consists of a three layers concept: - an Artificial Intelligence platform that, based on its user knowledge, manages the travel complexity offering alternative usage scenarios and assuring a seamless travel experience;
 - a vehicle shaped as a passenger capsule designed to be coupled with two different and independent electric propelled modules (the ground module and the air module). Other public means of transportation (e.g. trains or hyperloops) could also integrate the Pop.Up capsule;
 - an interface module that dialogues with users in a fully virtual environment.

The Pop.Up system aims to give time back to commuters through a flexible, shared and adaptable new way of moving within cities introducing a new user-focused transportation system concept. The Pop.Up vehicle combines the flexibility of a small two seater ground vehicle with the freedom and speed of a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) air vehicle, thus bridging the automotive and aerospace domains.

For megacity journeys with high congested traffic, the capsule disconnects from the ground module and is carried by a 5 by 4.4 metre air module propelled by eight counter-rotating rotors. In this configuration, Pop.Up becomes a urban self-piloted air vehicle, taking advantage of the third dimension to get from A to B efficiently whilst avoiding traffic congestion on the ground.

Once passengers reach their destination, the air and ground modules with the capsule autonomously return to dedicated recharge stations to wait for their next customers.
This project today is fiction as some solutions are not yet in experimental stage. Presently helicopters are the expensive solution for safe and fast comuting in congested megacities.

-Honda NeuV Self Driving Electric City Car Project

Making its European show debut in Geneva, the Honda NueV is a pure-electric concept car with a unique ownership proposition and a state-of-the-art ‘emotion engine’ that can learn about its driver. The NeuV (pronounced “new-vee”), which stands for New Electric Urban Vehicle, was conceived to take advantage of the fact that privately-owned vehicles sit idle for 96% of the time.

The pure-electric concept car explores a financially-beneficial ownership model for enterprising customers, by functioning as an automated ride sharing vehicle when the owner is not using the car. It would pick up and drop off customers at local destinations, and could also sell energy back to the electric grid during times of high demand when it‘s sitting idle, further monetising the vehicle’s down time.

NeuV also functions as a thoughtful and helpful AI assistant utilising an ‘emotion engine’ called HANA (Honda Automated Network Assistant), which learns from the driver by detecting emotions behind their judgments. It can then apply what it has learnt from the driver’s past decisions to make new choices and recommendations.

NeuV has two seats with luggage space behind, which also stores the ‘Kick ’n Go’ electric scooter concept designed for ‘last mile’ transit. The scooter concept is inspired by Honda’s original scooter of the same name launched in the 1970s. The new design is powered by a detachable battery rather than a chain mechanism, and can be recharged through a connection in NeuV’s luggage space. The new ‘Kick ’n Go’ concept demonstrates that Honda is looking at all aspects of affordable electric mobility that can enrich people’s daily lives.

-Ruf CTR 2017 -710hp -Carbon fibre skin and monocoque chassis -RUF 30th Anniversary Edition

Powered by a 710 horsepower twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine and built on a racecar-type chassis, the rear-engine, two-seater 2017 RUF CTR is the concept of a classic sports car that was maturing in Alois Ruf ’s head for a long time. It is an exciting prototype of a supercar that is planned to go into limited production by 2018. In both construction and design, the 2017 CTR is evolved from pure racing technology. Using the iconic lines of the legendary original CTR, world-renowned as “The Yellow Bird”, which is a name that recalls the nostalgic era of the 1987 Worlds Fastest Car Competition. In true ‘David and Goliath’ style the RUF company became famous for being the manufacturer that built the world’s fastest car with a charming nick-name. Our own history was used as the inspiration to build the 2017 CTR prototype. The new twin-turbocharged engine plus newly-developed six-speed manual transmission demonstrates the continuation of a long engineering tradition at RUF. The body is constructed with a full carbon-fibre skin on a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis, ensuring extreme rigidity, passenger safety and weight reduction making the CTR the first rear-engine carbon-fibre monocoque configuration. The front crash structure is built in a lightweight rigid steel as well as the integrated roll cage (IRC) The 3.6 litre engine produces 710 horsepower (522kw) and 880Nm (649lb-ft) maximum torque with a dry-sump lubrication system to ensure constant oil supply and pressure during extreme cornering and high speeds. This powerful engine propels the 1200kg (2640lb) CTR from 0-100km/h (0-62mph) under 3.5 seconds, 0-200km/h (0-125mph) under nine seconds and produces a top speed of over 360Km/h (225mph).

-Rinspeed Oasis Swiss Self Driving Technology Demonstrator

With the Rinspeed concept vehicle “Oasis,” the ingenious self-driving electric vehicle for the city and surrounding areas, Swiss visionary Frank M. Rinderknecht  refutes the deeply ingrained notion of the urban jungle that requires SUVs the size of battle tanks for the daily struggle for survival. His alternative concept: a maneuverable speedster with an integrated small garden plot behind the windshield

The self-driving Swiss vehicle is not a wallflower or strictly functional like the Google Car, but rather “next gen” - with a host of technical and visual treats inside. Because in keeping with a great tradition, the twenty-third Rinspeed concept car was again engineered by Swiss company 4erC and executed by Esoro.

Speaking of inside: The ultimate eye-catcher is the small garden with enough space for growing radishes or even little Bonsai trees. Automotive supplier Kostal adds the element of nature to the car to make it a true third space. “Home+Garden” becomes “Car+Garden” - brought together by a custom removable planter.

The small garden plot is just one of features that creates a new living space in the interior of the car. Armchairs, sideboard and TV provide a modern living room ambience in white. Everything looks welcoming and inviting.

Urban gardening on wheels as a new trend? A little bit out there? Maybe. But as always, the creation of Swiss mobility innovator Frank M. Rinderknecht is an oasis for inspiration in the otherwise rather expansive automotive wasteland.
