  • 4 - Aston Martin 1500 - Le Mans 1934

Aston Martin was one of the first car manufacturers to use the Le Mans designation in its production car model names, courtesy of its class win and fifth place overall in the 931 race. The second series of 1.5 Litre cars was introduced in February 1932 with the Le Mans model being launched at the London Motor Show of that year. Whilst looking very similar to its predecessor, this car was quite different internally with an all-new 102 inch (2590 mm) wheelbase chassis, a racing style dry sump engine lubrication, overhead camshaft four-cylinder engine, and a Laycock transmission that was now mounted to the engine. The 1495 cc. engine could produce 70 bhp at 5.000 rpm. The gearbox was a four-speed close ratio unit.
The chassis is of ladder type with crossing reinforcement elements. At the rear the chassis is positioned below the rear axle for a lower center of gravity.
The Aston Martin 1.5 Litre Series One was produced in 129 examples between 1927 and 1932. The Series Two models were produced between 1932 and 1933 at 130 examples.

  • 12 - Bugatti T54 8cyl 1931 ex-Varzi

Bugatti had to upgrade its Type 35 Grand Prix car in view of the fierce competition by Alfa Romeo and Maserati during early thirties race season. The Bugatti Type 54 was a direct response to this attack, based on the bloodline of the Type 35 but enhanced for Grand Prix competition; the Type 54 were the largest capacity Bugatti Grand Prix ever produced. Chassis N°54201, presented by Fiskens at the 2015 Retromobile, was the first of these 4.9 Litre twin overhead cam supercharged straight-eight cylinder propelled car to race at Grand Prix. This car was driven by Achille Varzi at 1931 Monza Grand Prix. Although coming first in the heats, and setting the fastest lap during the race itself, two burst tyres affected his chances of winning overall. He recovered to finish third.

  • 14 - Bugatti Type 50 1938

By 1950, Molsheim needed to fill a gap left by the existing series of Touring cars. This Bugatti Type 50 was a 4.9 Litre sports car with compressor. The chassis, radiator and gearbox were identical to the parts found on the Bugatti Type 46. The engine was based on the Type 46 but had some milestone features for Bugatti such as the first use of twin overhead camshafts and angled valve position (90 degrees) inspired by the American Miller race cars. The engine had a dry sump lubrication and a crankshaft with nine roller-bearings, the improved combustion resulting from the new layout delivered more power for the same size when compared with earlier Bugatti. The Type 46 S engine would deliver some 160 hp at 3.500 rpm while the Type 50 would give 225 hp at 4.000 rpm. The wheelbase was 3.10 metres.
In 1932 a slightly less sporty version of the Type 50 was launched, called the Type 50T with a wheelbase increased to 3.50 metres. Altogether not more than 65 Type 50/50T were built. A majority of the Type 50 had bodies prepared at the factory.

Influenced by the Miller twin cam racing cars, Ettore Bugatti set out to modify his Grand Prix car in the interest of ever increasing power and performance. Hence was born the Type 51 Grand Prix, most easily recognisable by the twin filler caps on its tail. Quite identical regarding the other components when compared to the Type 35 Grand Prix, the distinguishable difference is the 2.3 litre twin cam engine which offered slightly more power (187 hp) but also better torque. The first delivery went to factory-backed Louis Chiron, the second to Earl Howe and the third to Achille Varzi. This particular car was exhibited by Lukas Hüni AG at 2015 Retromobile and is part of a private collection.

Bugatti Type 53 4WD Race 1931 A number of manufacturers had been playing with the idea of four-wheel-drive, the idea of traction being an attractive prospect. Jean Bugatti, always open for innovative ideas, convinced his father in 1930 to develop a four-wheel drive race car totally separate from the existing program. The car would be based on the concept of Italian Engineer G.C. Cappa, formerly of FIAT who sent his colleague Antoine Pichetto to Molsheim to complete the design around the Bugatti engine.
