Cernobbio, Italy May 2018. The 2018 edition of the Concorso d'Elegance Villa d'Este gathered once again some fifty historic cars and half a dozen recent concept cars, but this time a set of formula One single seater was part of the show. The historic cars were introduced in different classes according to the style of automobile and the the date of production. This tradition goes back to 1929 when the Concorso started. There was a competition car category for several decades and it is original to see such high performance automobile demonstrating in a parade in the park in front of a luxury hotel. Now when Formula one monoposto racing cars are part of the show the experience is even more original.

The presentation of historic cars is one unique experience to view the evolution of the automobiles through the years and the transformation of what makes prestige vehicles. The Concorso in Villa d'Este is a unique occasion to view exceptional design in particular originated from the famous Italian designers with their show cars and one off edition of exclusive automobile at special request of wealthy customers. It sometimes result in piece of art.

We have tried here to provide a short presentation of most participant's automobile with some reference of production and potential value represented in auction sales. The presentation follows the different classes and awards proposed by the Jury and public selection.

Best of Show - 1958 Ferrari 335 Sport,Andreas Mohringer (AT)

The award of the Trofeo BMW Group to the Ferrari 335 Sport on Sunday brought the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2018 held in Cernobbio, Northern Italy, to a crowning finish. Film music accompanied the finale of the beauty pageant under the motto “Hollywood on the Lake” as Jury President Lorenzo Ramaciotti declared the racing car from 1958 as “Best of Show”. In 2016 one Ferrari 335S barchetta with quite a racing pedigree was sold for US$ 35.730.510 at Artcurial Auction Sales on February 5th in Paris. The winning automobile of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2018 is the youngest of only four cars of this type ever built. The tubular steel frame is styled with an outer skin produced in aluminium by coachbuilder Carrozzeria Scaglietti. The car shown here on the shores of Lake Como was produced in 1958 and an advanced V12 engine was installed with power enhanced to 430 hp and capable of achieving a top speed of more than 300 km/h.

Best of Show - 1957 Ferrari 335 Sport

Coppa d'Oro - 1968 Alfa Romeo 33/2 Stradale, Franco Scaglione, Albert Spiess (CH)

Prior to that, the Alfa Romeo 33/2 Stradale proved to be the darling of the public. Ten years younger than the Ferrari and just 99 centimetres high, the coupé was voted winner of the Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este and the Trofeo BMW Group Italia by visitors to the event. The trophy with the most traditional heritage of the competition was once again awarded on the basis of a public referendum. The winner of the Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este was the Alfa Romeo 33/2 Stradale from 1968, which was nominated in the award class “New World, new Ideas: The Story of the GT”. Visitors to the parkland of Villa d’Este were captivated by the swept body contours of the mid-engine coupé, which is just 99 centimetres high, and by the sound of its 230 hp V8 engine. The winning vehicle is just one of twelve cars of this model to be bodied by the Bertone designer of the time, Franco Scaglione, and hand crafted by skilled stylists. The lightweight chassis and aluminium outer skin meant that the two-seater only weighed 700 kilograms. The car’s Swiss owner, Albert Spiess, was delighted when he accepted the award: “It is truly wonderful for me to have won this prize. Being awarded this accolade by the public is absolutely unique.”

Before the class winners and the award for the vehicle honoured with the title “Best of Show” are announced on Sunday to bring the grand weekend for classics on the shores of Lake Como to a close, numerous special awards and prizes of honour are announced on Saturday at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. The Jury led by the President Lorenzo Ramaciotti bestows awards over and above the individual classes according to special qualities for the evaluation of historic cars. The awards acknowledge outstanding characteristics based on specific attributes that are important for the evaluation of classic vehicles. This year, awards were conferred for criteria including the most sensitive restoration here a 1930 Cadillac V16 Roadster By Fleetwood, particularly spectacular exterior styling and outstanding craftsmanship. The Jury was also looking for an outstanding example of the best iconic vehicle. Other prizes were bestowed for the best preserved pre-war, a 1936 Lancia Astura Serie III, by Pinin Farina, and post-war automobiles in the competition, the most elegant Rolls-Royce, 1929 Rolls Royce Phantom Brougham de Ville by Brewster & Co., and for the car driven from farthest away, a 1928 Bentley 4,5 Litre Dual Cowl Torpedo by Jarvis & Sons.

Design Award - Ferrari SP38

The presentation and award for concept vehicles and prototypes in special classes created for them is one of the traditional special features of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. In this way the organisers of the event recall the origin of the competition. The pageant was first held in 1929 as a performance contest for distinguished automobile manufacturers and coachbuilders that would allow them to present their latest creations on the shores of Lake Como. Today, the presentation of studies and prototypes creates a bridge between tradition and future. The Ferrari SP38 earned the Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award for the outstanding study in the automobile sector.

World Premiere Rolls Royce Cullinan

The BMW Group created the first highlights by launching a world premieres at the start of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2018. The new Rolls-Royce Cullinan was shown to the public in the grounds of the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este. The first model of the marque to have all-wheel drive and a large tailgate was presented as a representative of a new form of luxurious travel on any terrain. The Rolls-Royce Cullinan gives its occupants the characteristic feeling of sublime driving performance typical of the British marque even away from the tarmac: Effortless Everywhere

The 6.75 litre twin-turbo V12 Rolls-Royce engine delivers 563bhp/420kW and 850Nm/627lb ft of torque to the all-new all-wheel drive, all-wheel steer system needed to overcome any challenge.

Tested to destruction all over the planet, Cullinan is an incredibly capable off-roader that sees the development of the ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ for off-road enjoyment, without sacrificing any Rolls-Royce on-road behaviour.

Named after the largest diamond ever discovered which now resides in the British Crown Jewels.
